A stipulation in his father’s Will requires Edmund, Lord Rothwood to marry by his twenty-fifth birthday, or forfeit the bulk of his inheritance. In search of a dutiful wife who will let him do as he pleases, Edmund remembers young, docile Beatrix Trowley, whom he met years ago, and believes she will do nicely.
With her family’s welfare to consider, Beatrix quickly accepts Edmund’s offer. But only then does he discover that the once docile Beatrix is now a vivacious woman who will challenge his expectations at every turn—and just might be the true love of his life.

I was a bit worried about this book as it only had three reviews and two of them seemed to be from the author`s friend/family but the storyline interested me and I decided to take a chance on this book.I`m glad I did because it was a storyline a bit out of the ordinary and I like that. Beatrix an Edmund meet at the tender age of 14 and 15 and they immediately like each other. She likes how nice and patient he is to everyone and he likes how she makes him laugh.
When Edmund is close to 25 he remembers Beatrix because he knows he needs to marry or he will lose some of his inheritance from his father. After he met Beatrix last he`s been brainwashed by his father into thinking that he needs a meek wife and he wrongfully thinks Beatrix is exactly that.
Beatrix agrees to marry Edmund, partly because she remembers him as a sweet and gentle boy and partly because she needs to provide for her family. But when Edmund starts managing her life and tells her he is going to ship her to his country estate to live there by herself, she rebels.
It was an interesting story and I liked both the main characters, though I did prefer it when Beatrix openly rebelled instead of trying to manipulate Edmund, as she did in the beginning. I liked how the author showed Edmund learning from his mistakes and how Edmund and Beatrix grew closer to one another.
I didn't care too much for the crime plot in the story. It seemed a bit forced and as if it was only there to force Edmund and Beatrix to talk and learn from one another.
All in all this was a good book with nice characters and I`m going to check out this author to see if she has more books as interesting as this one.

The Dutiful Wife Signet Regency Romance InterMix edition by April Kihlstrom Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews
Charming, fun Regency with lovable characters! Our Heroine Beatrix has a flock of siblings so let's hope there will be more stories from this talented author!

I rarely read historicals/rRegencies.. This was SO worth it from beginning to end. A keeper, for sure. I highly recommend this one!
This was truly a delightful read! Edmund and his lady were so well suited. He was so endearingly conflicted that it gave me several laugh out lout moments. I didn't give the book five stars because the "mystery" was so contrived and completely unnecessary that I skipped over a few pages. There was enough romantic tension and conflict between the main characters that the subplot just seemed completely out of place. All in all it was a great read and I will be reading more from this author.
I'm in luck, this is another book that doesn't rely on loads of sex scenes to tell the story. We have a H in need of a wife before his 25th birthday in order to receive his inheritance. We have a h who is buried in the country with her large and poor family, definitely in need of rescuing. They'd both met and made an impression on each other as children and the H decides to try and track her down to see if she'd be a suitable wife. It's a lovely story with lots of depth and totally worth reading. The H has loads of emotional baggage and I love the way the h worked on him. I especially loved that she didn't become a shrew. I'll definitely be looking to read more by this author.
Edmund Lord Rothwood was fast approaching twenty five he has to marry or lose his inheritance. He remembers a girl from his childhood Beatrix Trowley. She was so kind and understanding to him. He marries her but finds out she was not the dutiful wife he expected to obey his commands. He had planned to leave her and go back to London on his own but she had other ideas. They may be at odds at times but love seems to be finding the both of them. The story also has a villain I am like another reviewer could have done without that part of the story.
This book is about Miss Beatrix Trowley and Edmund Heatherton, Viscount Rothwood. Beatrice is the eldest of seven children and is responsible for the running of the household since her parents aren't interested in doing so. Lord Rothwood must marry before his twenty-fifth birthday or lose much of his inheritance. He had spent some time with the Trowley family when he was in his teens and remembered Beatrix fondly and goes to her home to see if they would suit. So this story begins. I enjoyed this book immensely and I highly recommend it.
I loved The Dutiful Wife, particularly because it's a different kind of regency romance and because it's so well crafted by April Kihlstrom, one of the queens of regency writing. Edmund and Beatrix have tender memories of a childhood encounter when they shared their innermost dreams and true selves, so when Edmund must marry soon or risk losing the bulk of his considerable inheritance, he thinks of this sweet young girl. Her dream was to be a dutiful wife, and that was exactly what he wanted, a malleable sort content to live on his country estate and bear children --and not interfere with his London life. But now Beatrix's notion of being the proper wife is worlds apart from Edmund's. (He's determined to suppress his own nature and emulate his stern father's.) The newlyweds' first days are filled with a mixture of passion, dissension, humor, danger, and suspense complete with a determined villain. Terrific read!
