This is the story of an American family and the influence that five dogs had on them. The lives of each of the dogs is told. Two of them accomplished heroic deeds in Vietnam and died for a country they never knew. The others were always treated as more than pets - they were loved and treated as family members. They loved their human companions with a love that transcended ordinary human love, that ordinarily is the given only for what is given in return.
